A Service of Memory and Thanksgiving

for

David A. Leach

January 31, 1921-January 6, 1999

sung by brother, Ernest Leach, and daughter, Carol Ann Edington

(Accompaniment on piano throughout the service by daughter, Mary Elizabeth Raines)

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art,
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
Ni sudden rending of the veil of clay,
No angel visitant, no opening skies;
But take the dimness of my soul away.
Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh;
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;
teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame;
The baptism of the heaven-descended Dove,
My heart an altar and Thy love the flame.
O God, our Lifegiver, we praise You for life both present and eternal. We gather in Your name to offer our thanksigiving for Your servant Rev. David Leach and to celebrate his life. May we know Your comfort. May our sorrow be surpassed by Your reassurances that the one we mourn is now in Your eternal care. Amen.

Swing low, sweet chariot, Com-in' for to carry me home!
Swing low, sweet chariot, Com-in' for to carry me home.
I looked over Jordan, an' what did I see,
Com-in' for to carry me home!
A band of angels comin' after me,
Com-in' for to carry me home!
(repeat first two lines)
If you get there before I do,
Com-in' for to carry me home!
Jes' tell my fren's that I'm a comin' too,
Com-in' for to carry me home!
(repeat first two lines)
I'm sometimes up an' sometimes down,
Com-in' for to carry me home!
But still my soul feels heavenly bound',
Com-in' for to carry me home!
(repeat first two lines)
At this time, several people related to and acquainted with Rev. Leach, including his sister, Joy Sturteville, shared their memories of him.
There is a place of quiet rest, Near to the Heart of God,
A place where sin cannot molest, Near to the Heart of God,
Refrain:
O Jesus, blest Redeemer sent from the heart of God,
Hold us who wait before Thee, Near to the Heart of God,
There is a place of comfort sweet, Near to the Heart of God,
A place where we our Savor meet, Near to the Heart of God,
Refrain
There is a place of full release, Near to the Heart of God,
A place where all is joy and peace, Near to the Heart of God,
Refrain
The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord lift His countenance upon you,
and give you peace, and give you peace;
The Lord make His face to shine upon you,
And be gracious unto you, be gracious.
The Lord be gracious, gracious unto you. Amen.
