Assignment for Chapter 2

• What parts of the lesson are very familiar to you?

• What languages was the Grammar-Translation Method first used with and why?

• What is the difference between learning a language and learning about a language?

• List the pros and cons (advantages and disadvantages) of the Grammar-Translation Method. Be ready to discuss them with the class and write about them in your journal.

• Can you think of any creative applications of the Grammar Translation Method?

 

Assignment for Chapter 3

• What parts of the lesson are very familiar to you?

• How is the Direct Method similar to or different from the Grammar-Translation Method?

• What are the particular advantages or disadvantages of not using the students’ native language? When might it be advantageous to use the Direct Method?

• Be ready to explain the difference between inductive and deductive.

• Can you think of any creative applications of the Direct Method? (You may want to try out an idea in your final presentation.)

• What parts of the lesson are very familiar to you?

• The Audio-Lingual Method seems very similar to the Direct Method. What do they have in common? How do they differ?

• Be ready to identify the following:

    • Mim-Mem
    • Backward Build-up (Expansion) Drill
    • Substitution Drill
    • Chain Drill
    • Transformation Drill
    • Minimal Pairs

• Who originated The Silent Way?

• What are the arguments of cognitive psychologists against the Audio-Lingual Method?

• Why is The Silent Way called "the silent way"?

• In what ways does The Silent Way differ from any of the methods we’ve studied so far?

• If you can, try to think of some creative way that the rods might be used. (Several will be demonstrated in class.)

• Who originated Suggestopedia?

• Describe the classroom in a Suggestopedia class.

• How is new material presented?

• What is the Concert? What kind of music is used?

• Why do students choose new names and identities? Do you think this would be effective?

• Why do students wear different hats when reading the dialogue?

• Are there any aspects of Suggestopedia that might be appropriate for your classroom? How would your students react to a relaxation session with soft music?

• What approach is the Community Language Learning Method taken from? Who developed it?

• How is the classroom set up in this method, and what equipment is necessary?

• What do the students do during the lesson? What does the teacher do? Where is the teacher?

• What is the teacher’s role in the Counseling-Learning approach? What is a language counselor?

• Could this method be effective in a Japanese classroom? What are the pros and cons?

• Who developed the Total Physical Response Method?

• What does the teacher do in the Total Physical Response Method? What do the students do?

• Have you ever used any techniques similar to those in TPR? Explain.

• TPR is frequently used with beginners. Can you think of any commands that might be used for intermediate or advanced students?
