Besides teaching part-time at Hokkaido University of Education and Sapporo University, I have my own school. My specialties are preparing students for studying abroad, preparing contestants for speech contests, and teaching academic writing (via email, if necessary). I teach private lessons and some conversation classes for adults. Descriptions and syllabi for my university classes are available online. For more information about my work and educational background, see my resume.
I also have private sessions in hypnotherapy and body-centered therapy for those seeking relief from stress, weight reduction, overcoming phobias, quitting smoking, building self esteem, and many other areas. My training for certification was in Los Angeles with Mary Elizabeth Raines, and I am a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists. The sessions are for those fluent in English.
I was the ESL (English as a Second Language) Director at Heidelberg College Japan from September, 1995 until March, 1999. Below is a photo of me with some of the "graduates" from HCJ.
The students in the photo studied at colleges in Monterrey, CA, Missoula, MT, and Boston, MA.
I have been working as an ESL instructor for more than 21 years. My students have been of all levels, including those who spoke no English, and ranged from ages 10 to 70. Altogether I have taught students from close to 70 countries.
I am a member of TESOL or Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have given presentations twice, on the selection of and developing materials for feature films, at their annual international conference.
I am also a member and Membership Chair of the local JALT (Japan Association of Language Teachers) chapter where I have given several presentations on topics ranging from Innovative Teaching Methods to Use of Feature Films in the Classroom to Learning Disabilities. I am currently working on articles and presentations on Peer Feedback in Process Writing.
In addition, I volunteer as a teacher at the ESL Help Center at Dave's ESL Cafe on the Internet. I help to answer all kinds of questions about the English language but particularly those pertaining to vocabulary and grammar.
I specialize in doing proofreading of all sorts, with a great deal of experience in academic research in the areas of sociology and language.
