CONSTRUCTION NEXT DOOR

Drastic changes took place all around me from 1999-2001. In November, 1999, construction of new 10-story and 15-story apartment buildings began next to and behind my apartment. From my window I had an excellent view of the whole process, although the machinery sometimes came a little too close for comfort. It often felt as though my building was being shaken by an earthquake.

Construction began promptly at 8:15 a.m. Before that, the workers went through a daily exercise routine. This is common at most Japanese construction sites.

The outdoor exercises took place even in winter: "Now side stretches. And left, and right, and left, and right…"
